SELECTIONS
Ahti Kotisaari, Dirk de Herder and Hanna Arvela until 15 September (2001) in Laterna Magica, Rauhankatu 7,(Helsinki, Finland). Mo - Fri 10-18, Sat 10-15. If in the present cluster of exhibitions at Laterna Magica Hanna Arvela represents a Young artist taking a stand, Dutch Dirk de Herder the older black-and-white classicism of photography, then Ahti Kotisaari with his bed pictures represents experimental middle age in photography. Kotisaari strives to create his photographs as painterly compositions, with their softly floating colour surfaces gently merging into each other. He makes the print using the latest digital technology. The topic is his loved one in between the sheets, portrayed from close up and even behind the ears. Indeed, Kotisaari succeeds in dismantling the objectifying qualities of the camera. It is as if he takes the camera with him within the embrace.
